Step 4 — Swap a token inside Phantom

Practise the exact motion of a trade: swapping SOL for a token and back, plus what slippage and network fees mean.

What a swap is

A swap trades one token for another directly from your wallet. There is no order book, no waiting and no account — you press swap, sign, and it settles in about a second.

Before touching a memecoin, do one practice swap with a well-known token so the flow is familiar.

Do your first swap

Try swapping about $2 of SOL into USDC, then swap it back. It costs you almost nothing and teaches you the whole interface.

  • Open Phantom and tap the Swap icon.
  • From: SOL. To: search USDC and select it.
  • Enter the amount and check the rate it quotes you.
  • Tap Swap and confirm. Watch the balance update in your token list.

Slippage in plain English

Slippage is how much price movement you will accept between pressing the button and the trade landing. Too low and the trade keeps failing; too high and you get a worse price than expected.

  • Big tokens like USDC: 0.5%–1% is fine.
  • New memecoins moving fast: 5%–15% is often needed just to get filled.
  • If a swap keeps failing, raise slippage slightly — do not raise your size.

Fees and always keeping SOL

Solana network fees are tiny, usually well under a cent, but you still need SOL in the wallet to pay them. Always leave around 0.02 SOL untouched, otherwise you will be unable to sell a token you are holding.

Pasting a token address safely

Memecoins are found by contract address, not by name — dozens of fakes copy every popular ticker. Only ever copy the address from the coin's own page on pump.fun, and check the first and last four characters after pasting.
