Step 2 — Get a Phantom wallet
Take self-custody: download Phantom, create a Solana wallet, and save your recovery phrase properly so the coins are truly yours.
Why you want your own wallet
Buying inside pump.fun is convenient, but the SOL you buy there is held by the app's connected wallet. To truly own your coins — and to swap, send, and hold safely — you want a self-custody wallet where you control the keys.
For pump.fun you need a Solana wallet. Phantom is the easiest one to start with: it works on iPhone, Android, and as a browser extension on your laptop.
Install Phantom
Only ever install from the official store listing or from phantom.com. Fake wallet apps and fake download links are the single most common way beginners lose everything.
- iPhone: open the App Store, search 'Phantom Crypto Wallet', check the developer is Phantom Technologies.
- Android: open Google Play, search 'Phantom', same developer check.
- Laptop: go to phantom.com and add the browser extension for Chrome, Brave or Firefox.
- Open the app and tap 'Create a new wallet'.
Your recovery phrase
Phantom shows you 12 words. Those words ARE your wallet. Anyone with them can take every coin you own, from anywhere in the world, instantly and permanently.
- Write the 12 words on paper, in order. Two copies, two different places.
- Never screenshot them, never put them in Notes, iCloud, WhatsApp or email.
- No real support person will ever ask for them. Anyone who does is stealing from you.
- Turn on the phone's Face ID / passcode lock for the app.
Find your wallet address
At the top of Phantom you will see something like 7xKX...9fQz. That is your public Solana address — the equivalent of your account number. It is safe to share, and you will use it to receive crypto. Tap it to copy.
